Tony Melville was appointed the Deputy Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Constabulary in January 2007. He has worked in the force for the last four years as one of the Assistant Chief Constables.

During his time as Deputy Chief Constable he has led the work to return 200 police officers to frontline duties, and significantly improve the confidence of local people in policing and their levels of satisfaction with the policing provided.

As an Assistant Chief Constable he took the lead in a variety of areas. He oversaw the roll out of neighbourhood policing across the force during 2003 and led on work to maximise the time officers are able to spend outside police stations. In 2005 he became the lead officer for Human Resources and Training. The following year he led the Constabulary’s work on force amalgamation and a significant re-organisation of the force to focus on providing better services.

Tony Melville’s career began in 1981 when he joined Warwickshire Constabulary, having spent three years as a police cadet. He served in all ranks from Constable to Chief Superintendent.

As a Chief Superintendent he performed the role of BCU Commander for two years and was the Force Crime Manager before his appointment as ACC.

In January 2008 he joined the ACPO Drugs Committee and led the ACPO work with the Home Office for the National Tackling Drugs Week in 2008.
