Giles York joined South Wales Police as an Assistant Chief Constable in January 2005. He joined the force from Kent Police where his previous posts included Area Commander for Medway and in the office of the National Co-ordinator of Special Branch. Prior to this he was Head of Special Branch at Kent Police with responsibility for policing the Channel Tunnel and Kent ports.

As ACC (Crime and Operations) he has overall responsibility for the force's 7 Base Command Units, Crime Support and Operational Support.

He is the Regional Chair of the Regional Tactical Tasking & Co-ordinating Group with responsibility for TARIAN enforcement, Special Branch RIC and RART. He has national responsibility in ACPO(TAM) on behalf of Wales.
