Dr. Tom Carnwath has been working for five years as Consultant Psychiatrist/Clinical Director in Substance Misuse for County Durham and Teeside, and also leads a substance misuse unit at Durham Prison. Before this he worked for fifteen years in Trafford, Manchester. In the distant past he has been a GP. He has published extensively, particularly concerning prescribed diamorphine, opiate withdrawal and the treatment of stimulant misuse. He has written books about behaviour therapy in primary care, and more recently a general survey of heroin entitled Heroin Century. He was recently Honorary Secretary of the Faculty of Substance Misuse at Royal College of Psychiatrists, and has participated in a number of national working parties (for example on community care in psychiatry, preventing suicide in prisons and the DH expert advisory groups on heroin prescription and treating cocaine misuse).
