Professor Ambros Uchtenhagen is President of the Research Institute for Public Health and Addiction in Switzerland.
Specialising in psychiatry and psychotherapy, since 1970 his work has involved organisation and direction of the social psychiatric services at the Psychiatric University Hospital of Zurich and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at Zurich Medical School. In 1977 Ambros was appointed Professor of Social Psychiatry and Co-director of Psychiatric University Hospital, becoming a full professor in 1992.
He is co-founder and first president of two professional associations the Swiss Association of Group Psychotherapy and Group Psychology and the Swiss Association of Social Psychiatry.
Ambros is an Expert on a wide range of national and international committees including the Expert Panel on Drugs of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and has carried out missions on behalf of WHO to various countries. He has also been responsible for numerous research projects in the fields of psychotherapy, psychiatry and drug dependence.
He is co-editor of several scientific journals, co-editor-in-chief of European Addiction Research and editor of a comprehensive handbook on Addiction Medicine.
